Van Horn latest to cash in on NBA's trade provisions

Don't look for P.J. Brown to join the list of players making a brief comeback for an easy payday.

The 38-year-old power forward, who has not played since helping the Bulls reach the second round of last year's Eastern Conference playoffs, has no interest in returning to the NBA, according to his agent, Mark Bartelstein.

"He's happy with his family, just enjoying being retired and living in Louisiana," Bartelstein said. "I've had a lot of calls for him, [but] he's shown no interest."

Brown's reluctance to play is bad news for Chicago, which still owns his rights and thus could potentially use him in a sign-and-trade. The Bulls are said to be one of the more active teams in this year's trade market. Unfortunately for them, they don't have any players with significant expiring contracts.

Panicky villagers turn to MLA

A multiplex-cum-mall is already coming up in place of Jagat Cinema in Sector 17. The construction of a multiplex in place of KC Cinema is yet to begin as the owner of the property is still waiting for sanction of the building plans.

Though the owners of Neelam Cinema have yet to apply for conversion under the Multiplex Policy-2006, sources in the real estate business confirmed that a Bangalore-based group had acquired leasehold rights of the property for a period of 35 years.

The arrangement would work as in case of the Fun Republic multiplex. The owner of the property had leased out the property to a subsidiary of Zee Group. The sources said the value of Neelam Cinema had been assessed at around Rs 280 crore.

One of the owners GS Kairon was contacted on the phone but was elusive on the issue.

Britain ‘seen as a soft touch’

First we're told immigrants took 30 per cent of the 2.7 million jobs created in the past decade. Then the official figure was increased to 40 per cent. Now it's 52 per cent – making Gordon Brown's promise of “British jobs for British workers" look pretty silly.

It's all guesswork, and the Government has even less of a clue how many illegal immigrants there are.

Of course it's right that we share the international burden of caring for genuine refugees fleeing persecution and death. But we're being exploited. Britain is seen around the world as a soft touch.

We must remember that, as the grandmother I was talking to the other day pointed out, charity begins at home.

Fine lint remains in high demand

The spot rates of KCA declined twice Rs 100 per maund to remain firm at Rs 3,100 per maund.

He said local market would remain firm and witnesses an active trading activity as most of the players in Sindh and Punjab were ready to consolidate their long positions before general elections on February 18. He said during past week, private sector commercial exporters also brought out cotton on competitive rates while Punjab lint dominated the volumes during the past week.

The power problem is still badly affecting the ginning activities in Sindh and Punjab fore the last many weeks and production of many ginning factories remained below to meet the requirement of the market demand.

Japan posts highest trade deficit in two years

Japan ran a deficit of 79.34 billion yen ($801 million) in January, much higher than a year-earlier deficit of 3.49 billion yen and market forecasts for a deficit of 5.6 billion yen.

Japan often has a trade deficit in January due to the New Year holidays, but even so analysts said the figures were a worry.

"Exports maintained double-digit growth for more than two years from late 2005 but they are now losing steam,'' Naoki Murakami, senior economist at Goldman Sachs, wrote in a note to clients.

Imports grew 9.0 per cent from a year earlier to 6.49 trillion yen, the highest figure for the month of January, with imports of crude oil surging 41.0 per cent, the finance ministry said.

Exports rose 7.7 per cent to 6.41 trillion yen on a continued fall in shipments to the United States and slower growth in exports to China.
