China's Big Outward Leap

Dozens of countries from Norway to Abu Dhabi to Kazakhstan have set up so-called sovereign wealth funds to seek better returns from investing their hoards of cash. When China Investment came formally to life on Sept. 29, its $200-billion inheritance automatically made it one the biggest such funds in the world.

A bold beginning

The company made headlines even before it was born when its forerunner, Central Huijin Investment Co., agreed to pay $3-billion for a stake in Blackstone Group LP, the biggest publicly traded private equity fund in the United States. Normally, said investment analyst Andrew Milligan, a new investing company would start more conservatively, buying first into blue-chip assets and moving gradually up the risk curve. "The Chinese didn't. They immediately moved into private equity, which I found fascinating," said Mr.

Disowned by the Ownership Society

Remember the "ownership society," fixture of major George W. Bush addresses for the first four years of his presidency? "We're creating…an ownership society in this country, where more Americans than ever will be able to open up their door where they live and say, welcome to my house, welcome to my piece of property," Bush said in October 2004. Washington think-tanker Grover Norquist predicted that the ownership society would be Bush's greatest legacy, remembered "long after people can no longer pronounce or spell Fallujah." Yet in Bush's final State of the Union address, the once-ubiquitous phrase was conspicuously absent. And little wonder: rather than its proud father, Bush has turned out to be the ownership society's undertaker.

Well before the ownership society had a neat label, its creation was central to the success of the right-wing economic revolution around the world.

New Index Contains Companies that Support Stewardship

Index leader launches first index series based on the Dharmic religions.

SocialFunds.com -- Dow Jones Indexes in partnership with Dharma Investments made investment history when they recently released the first index series based in the Dharmic practices. The Dow Jones Dharma Global Index also is available as four country specific indexes: US, UK, Japan and India.

The companies included in the Dharma Global Index are screened according to principles found in religions of Buddhism and Hinduism. However, its creators also hope that its broad range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) screens has appeal to a broad range of investors, inside and outside of these religious practices.

Dow Jones' website defines Dharma as "spiritual concept central to the many religions originating in South Asia.

Shares End Low on Continued Credit Worries; Autos Slide

European shares closed lower on Friday for the second straight session, with financials under pressure amid continued worries about credit market exposure and as evidence of earnings damage emerged at Belgium lender Dexia.

With crude oil futures rallying and dollar weakness continuing, auto producers including Porsche, Fiat and Renault also skidded lower. Porsche lost 5.5%, Fiat declined 3.2% and Renault slipped 2.6%.

Overall, the pan-European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index lost 0.9% at 362.72. The index has spent two-thirds of November's twelve trading sessions in the red, with Friday bringing the number of down days to eight because of the ...
